Working with your foot doctor when you have diabetes
A podiatrist, a doctor specializing in foot care, is one of the most important members of your diabetes healthcare team. A podiatrist will help you manage the foot problems that can occur as a result of your diabetes.
Foot problems are common in individuals with diabetes, because the condition can cause poor blood circulation to your legs and feet. Diabetes also can lead to nerve damage. Together, these conditions may make foot problems more likely and more difficult to heal. Infections can eventually lead to gangrene if they do not heal. In order to keep gangrene (the death of tissue and skin around a sore) from spreading, a doctor may have to amputate a toe, foot or part of a leg.
Podiatrists will help diagnose and treat foot problems related to your diabetes. They can assist you with the following:
- Removal of corns and calluses
- Treatment of foot sores (ulcers) and ingrown toenails
- Prescribing medication for infections such as nail fungus and athlete's foot
- Trimming nails
- Examining feet for potential problems
- Teaching you how to take care of your feet between visits
- Teaching you how to buy shoes that fit properly and recommending special diabetes shoes and socks
Ask your primary care doctor for a referral to a podiatrist. To locate one in your area, use the "Find a Podiatrist" link on our Find a Provider page.
