Penlac® FAQs

Q: Will I have to have blood tests when I use Penlac® to treat my nail fungus?

A: No. Penlac® is a brush-on medication that works by targeting the site of the infection, right on your nails, making it a safe treatment for nail fungus. You don't have to worry about inconvenient blood tests. In addition, no drug interactions with other medications have been reported.

Q: How long before my nails start looking better?

A: You need to be realistic about how long it will take to treat your nail fungus. Healthy toenails take at least a year to grow out; fingernails take about six months to grow out. And remember to continue your medication even if your nails start looking better. Your healthcare professional will advise you how long to continue treatment.

Q: How long will I need to use Penlac®?

A: Your healthcare professional will advise you when to end treatment. The recommended treatment plan for Penlac® is 48 weeks and should be used as part of a comprehensive management program, which may include removal of the unattached, infected nail as frequently as monthly.

Q: How often do I apply Penlac®?

A: So that you get the best results, apply Penlac® daily to all affected nails, over the previous coat. (Try to tie it to another activity you do daily, such as brushing your teeth, so you don't forget.) Once weekly, remove Penlac® with alcohol.

Q: Will Penlac® cure my nail fungus?

A: Nail fungus is a progressive and recurring condition. Even if successfully treated, nail fungus may come back. We understand that this can be frustrating, so we have included some tips from experts on how to keep your nails healthy. Early detection and treatment of recurring nail fungus also is important.

Q: My doctor prescribed Penlac® because I didn't want to take an oral medication that might interact with other drugs I'm taking. But my nail fungus is not that bad. Do I really need treatment?

A: Without treatment, nail fungus will continue to infect your nail. Although it may take a while, untreated nail fungus usually gets worse.

Q: My doctor told me about oral prescription treatment options for my nail fungus. Some of them sounded like they could have serious side effects such as liver damage. How safe is Penlac®?

A: Penlac® is the first and only brush-on prescription treatment approved by the FDA for treatment of mild and moderate nail fungus. It has been clinically tested and proven safe and effective. Penlac® works from the outside in — targeting the problem, not the whole body. No laboratory blood tests are needed.

In addition, Penlac® is well-tolerated. The most common side effects are redness around nails and nail disorders including shape change, irritation, ingrown toenail and discoloration.

Penlac® is indicated in immunocompetent patients with mild to moderate onychomycosis without lunula involvement due to Trichophyton rubrum.
